Being a wise woman - Abigail

1 Sam. 25:28 Please forgive the transgression of your female servant, for Jehovah will no doubt make a sure house for my lord, because my lord fights the battles of Jehovah; and no evil will be found in you throughout your days.

This verse came from Abigail. During the time she spoke this, she was the wife of Nabal. Nabal didn't know the way he insulted King David would bring danger to him and his family. However, when Abigail heard the report from her servant, she realised that the danger was coming, and she had to do something.

Several things about Abigail shed some light concerning how to be a wife.

Didn't she know her husband is cruel with a terrible temper? She definitely did. However, she didn't ask to leave her husband. Instead, she was being such a great helper to save the family of Nabal. She didn't waste her time complaining about what kind of husband she had and felt pitiful. She simply acted according to her wisdom.

I think this is really what we need today. Abigail, as a wife of Nabal, didn't join herself in the sins of Nabal but instead, and asked for forgiveness on behalf of the whole family of Nabal. Nowadays, many people divorced their counterparts because they found another person incurable. Abigail was such a faithful woman who considered the best for her husband.

a. She's faithful to her husband

b. She didn't waste her time complaining about her husband's wrongdoings

c. She exercised her wisdom to tackle the difficult situation with the best interest of her husband in mind

d. She was indeed a great helper to her husband.

Although the MR that I was reading concerning Abigail was not intended to make us best wives, I think many wives have the same thoughts as I do - we can spot our husbands' certain behaviours and think "oh my Lord, how come he is so ____ ? You can replace the space as "stubborn, stingy, bad-tempered...etc." But really, when the day we got married, we joined ourselves to another calling - a calling that we sisters can be one with God to help the husbands to be ones that the Lord need them to be. This is our calling when the day we join another person. We need to realise this calling and appreciate that everything we deal with in the marriage is our cooperation with God.

Anyways, as a wife, I cannot help but relate this passage to the practical implication of a marriage.

May the Lord collect our every drop of tear to His glorious economy!

We love You, Lord!
